California adventure wrap up - quick and dirty

Okay, I totally fell behind on the telling of our trip to California...so I will finish the story quickly, and have it done with.

Wednesday, May 3 (California Day 5)
We woke up early and headed for the bay on foot. Stopping at the portion of Lombard Street that is known to be the most crooked street in the world. Also along the way we saw a flock of green parakeets. I don't know if paprakeets are naturally wild in San Francisco or not, but it was really exciting to see them flying around outside...and what a noise they make!

Then it was on to Fisherman's wharf. First stop Boudin Sourdough bakery for breakfast/lunch. Mr. J loves sourdough bread, so this was a must on our list! Yummy.

From there we headed to Alcatraz Island for a tour. The birds on the island are so amazing. Not only did we see many many many seagulls (they're huge), but Black Oster-catchers, Snowy Egretts, and a Black-Crowned Night Herron...I like birds. I also found it amazing that tere are Calla Lillies growing on Alcatraz - I know that the gardens are manicured, but it costs $10 a stem to buy lillies here in a flower shop, and they are about a 1/4 of the size if the ones we saw there (bigger than my hand!!!).

When we got back to the wharf, we went into the Musée Mechanique - a museum of old coin operated mechanical arcade games and musical instruments, U.S.S. Pampanito - a WWII submarine, Pier39 - shopping and Sea Lions, and dinner at Wipeout Bar & Grill. Then we took the F-Line back to our end of town and back to the hotel!

End Day 5!

Thursday, May 4 (California Day 6)
San Francisco Zoo! But not before we went on a BORING walk along the Great Highway between Golden Gate Park and the zoo...the map we had was completely wrong about the distance...it took us about 20 minutes to walk through the park (about and inch on the map), and well over an hour to walf from the park edge to the zoo (less than an inch on the map). But the zoo was worth it when we got there. I found out after we got home that the SF Zoo has a white peacock - I didn't see it though...boo!!! But we did see an albino kangaroo - creepy!

And that was really the only thing of note that we managed to get done on Thursday. We had a bit of a lie in, and ate breakfast in the room (Boudin bread and fresh fruit)...we ate at Lori's dinner...not much excitement...

okay, so I didn't quite get it all finished here...only 2 more days to tell about, but that will have to wait for another time...so
...TO BE CONTINUED...

Yeah, Musée Mechanique is one of my faves too! It use to be housed at the Cliffhouse and only about half the collection is at the new home. The rest was sold.
