the "spooky mile"

Another highlight of our trip to Victoria...

I had to do a bit of research on this one... on our drive through the Malahat on our way to Tofino...the roadside was dotted with Jack O lanterns... Halloween being one of my favorite time of years, I was delighted by this, and needless to say quite curious as to what the heck it was all about...

What was started by a single person 13 years ago, has grown to a delightful tradition for visitors, as well as for local (abundantly clear by the shear number of participants)...

JACK-O-LANTERNS LIGHT UP SHADY MILE THIS HALLOWE’EN
On All Hallows Eve, when ghosts and goblins are haunting the streets, Nanaimo’s Shady Mile is transformed into a ‘Spooky Mile’ as thousands of carved pumpkins appear at the roadside, in trees and at the forest edge along this wooded stretch of Jinglepot Road. . Along the way The Shady Mile Farm Market on Jinglepot Road becomes a ‘Pit Stop’ for pumpkin tourists, complete with a Haunted Greenhouse, bonfires. Local lore tells a tale that begins twelve years ago when residents of Nanaimo’s ‘Shady Mile’ placed four pumpkins along the roadside in celebration of Halloween. The following year nearly 180 carved pumpkins appeared along the stretch. Now, people bring pumpkins from throughout Nanaimo to be part of the “Spooky Mile”. More than 3,000 jack-o’-lanterns are expected to appear during the week of Halloween.
