Wow! Tat's a lot of names...

So I've change the song for your listening pleasure...it was more than past time for a change.

Jenny Lewis with The Watson Twins (Featuring Ben Gibbard, Connor Oberst, M.Ward)Handle With Care (Roy Orbison Cover)

I think the new addition will be short lived. Roy Oribson, although a well reputed songster for his time, provides little to inspire a great cover. This is more than evident, but I thought it worthy of a little air time on my space for the simple fact that the collective group is chalk full of much greater, and much more inspiring, talet.

But, of course, this is only one girl's opinion...

Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie, The Postal Service, All-time Quarterback, Dntel)
Connor Oberst (Commander Venus, Saddle Creek Records, Bright Eyes, Desaparecidos)
M. Ward (aka Matt Ward)
Jenny Lewis (Child actress, Rilo Kiley, The Postal Service)
The Watson Twins

And this is just adorable:

First of all, that is a pretty awesome indie line-up for a cover of
anything. Secondly, I love the Bonnie Raitt cover of 'You Got It'. Thirdly,
thanks for pointin out that dastardly mistake of mine in attributing the lyrics
on my space- Patrick

Burton iconography...

Some people are firm believers in religeous iconography (ie. Jesus on a potato chip, or the Virgin Mary on the men's room floor)...I see Zero (Jack Skellington's faithful companion from Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas) in a rose bush...

That is so cool! I love it when that happens - sometimes, if you stop and look
into a forest from just the right angle, you see crowds and faces; but once you
move, you'll never see those same faces again

That's cool. And more of a likeness than the Virgin Mary on the side of a building in Florida (I actually saw it but didn't SEE anything). Nice site.

Sick and tired (literally)

So, I am at home sick for the second time this week, and the fourth time in 2 months...

Today was my second trip to the clinic in as many months, and as my friends an family will atest, I loath going to the doctor. Doctors terrify me, so for me to work up the nerve to go, there really has to be something wrong with me...and there is.

The doctor (who was very kind, but still quite scary) has prescribed antibiotics for the nagging sinus infection that has gotten the better of me over the last week, and eye drops for the eye infection that I awoke with this morning. She has also assured me that NO, I'm not dying, and NO my recent bouts of malais, although quite close together, are not symptoms of something bigger lurking in the near future...WHEW!

So, with a self awarded pat on the back for bravery, I left the clinic to have yet another prescription filled (YUCK!) and to replace all of the cosmetics I will be throwing away due to this eye infection nonsense...closely followed by a peppermint mocha from starbuck, purely to cheer me up!

the "spooky mile"

Another highlight of our trip to Victoria...

I had to do a bit of research on this one... on our drive through the Malahat on our way to Tofino...the roadside was dotted with Jack O lanterns... Halloween being one of my favorite time of years, I was delighted by this, and needless to say quite curious as to what the heck it was all about...

What was started by a single person 13 years ago, has grown to a delightful tradition for visitors, as well as for local (abundantly clear by the shear number of participants)...

JACK-O-LANTERNS LIGHT UP SHADY MILE THIS HALLOWE’EN
On All Hallows Eve, when ghosts and goblins are haunting the streets, Nanaimo’s Shady Mile is transformed into a ‘Spooky Mile’ as thousands of carved pumpkins appear at the roadside, in trees and at the forest edge along this wooded stretch of Jinglepot Road. . Along the way The Shady Mile Farm Market on Jinglepot Road becomes a ‘Pit Stop’ for pumpkin tourists, complete with a Haunted Greenhouse, bonfires. Local lore tells a tale that begins twelve years ago when residents of Nanaimo’s ‘Shady Mile’ placed four pumpkins along the roadside in celebration of Halloween. The following year nearly 180 carved pumpkins appeared along the stretch. Now, people bring pumpkins from throughout Nanaimo to be part of the “Spooky Mile”. More than 3,000 jack-o’-lanterns are expected to appear during the week of Halloween.

... all I see, is where else I could be, when I'm at home...

Cause in my head there’s a greyhound station
Where I send my thoughts to far off destinations
So they may have a chance of finding a place
where they’re far more suited than here

I have returned, begrudgingly, from six glorious days away from my meager existence in Calgary...Victoria was grand! There was nothing in particular that made it so, apart from three simple, but very powerful facts...

1. I wasn't in Calgary

2. I wasn't at work

3. I had Mr. J with me

Granted, the weather left much to be desired at times, none of which we spent outside anyway...and work is quite quiet right now (despite my working 10 hours on my first day back)...and Mr. J got on my nerves more that once during the trip...but I still had a splendid time, and am somewhat disheartened that the time has come and gone so quickly.

A quick recap of the trips events, and then I must be off to bed to store up some much needed Zs...

We arrived in Victoria at 10:50 Thursday morning...spent the day walking through old downtown, and sipping yummy coffee by the harbor. We decided that we should get all of the CAR items checked off of our list in the first few days so we could return the burdensome rental gas guzzling unit and save some of the cash lining our pocket books for something more fun (a new digital camera for Mr. J's 30th birthday!)...

Friday morning saw us off to Tofino...well, we eventually made it to Tofino...the 8:30 traffic jam, a minor detour due to no map and then another minor detour due to a poor quality map, stops in Coombs (there were no Goats on that roof!), Cathedral Grove, Long Beach...we made it to Tofino at about 4:30ish...only to find that it wasn't the destination, but the journey that was the memorable part of the day...

Saturday and Monday were spent taking in the tourist traps...

-Bouchard Gardens - Pretty!
-Craigdarroch Castle - Meh! Not really my deal...
-China Town - Fan Tan Alley was neato!
-Undersea Gardens - interesting in that slightly creepy way...
-Bug Zoo - I guess I'm not really a kid any more!
-Rogers Chocolates - YUM!

Sunday we spent apart for fear one of us wouldn't make the trip home in one piece. We decided it would be fun to document our days to help in the story telling when we were reunited...a fun idea I highly recommend to any traveling couple. Not only did it allow us the much needed breathing room, but allowed us to pursue parts of the city that the other person may not have enjoyed as much...

It was a good trip despite that fact that there were no amazing highlights...

Biggest thrill - seeing seals in the harbor

Biggest let down - 2 way tie - not going Whale Watching and not calling my friend Lori to go for coffee...Sorry Lori! Next time! Oh, yes, there WILL be a next time...

Adieu et Bon soir!

Sleepless nights...

Sometimes I have trouble sleeping because I'm thinking about work...
Sometimes I have trouble sleeping because I'm worried about my relationship...
Sometimes I have trouble sleeping because I've had too much caffine...
And sometimes I have trouble sleeping for some unknown reason....

Last night was one of those nights. I took me forever to fall asleep (not until after I had the displeasure of hearing what I am 99% sure was a gunshot in my neighbourhood - yikes!), the sleep I did get was completely restless (my blankets are completely untucked and in the middle of my bed), and my eyes opened at 5:38 am this morning. That was to be the end of the sleep aloted for me last night. I laid in bed until my clock went off at 6:45, but there was no more sleep to be had...

Electronic Elation!

My mp3 player arrived in the mail yesterday after nearly a month of waiting...
I had been very reluctant to join the ranks of the musical pirates and buy myself an mp3 player, but with the impending death of my CD walkman the need became great to find a replacement least the air around be become silent...or worse, filled with radio drivel! So to ebay I looked for an afordable solution to this future crisis situation...

I now hold in my possession a frosty silver Sony 1GB network walkman...and I never dreamt that an 1 1/2" diameter piece of electronics could afford me so much joy! I love the little darling, and I don't care if that goes against my newly adopted pirate status!

Something worth seeing...

Bridge poet strikes again!

over the weekend, city workers sandblasted the portion of the sidewalk on the bridge where our friendly neighbourhood poet had left his/her mark...and he/she promptly responded with a new verse for my hungry eyes...

"They love each other so, androgynous."

Thank you bridge poet where ever you may be!
